What kind of soil do I use?

First know what kind of grass you are growing and the climate you are in. Seek out information from sod suppliers, local extension offices, garden nurseries and the internet. Northern states typically have cool season grasses while southern states have warm season grasses.

A few examples of warm season grasses include: bermuda grass, paspalum, zoysia and St. Augustine. The ideal soil to add is sand or a sandy loam during the growing season from spring to fall. With water, fertilizer and frequent mowing these warm season grasses will grow laterally in the sand. Over time, this growth within the sand will fill in your bare spots.

Cool season grasses include Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and perennial ryegrass. A topsoil with organic matter in it will be a good choice for filling in bare spots. You can buy bags of topsoil from your local home improvement store. Level in areas, add seed and follow watering guidelines to grow grass in the bare spots. The topsoil will help germinate the seed by keeping it moist and giving it proper nutrients.

How do I apply soil and use the Rocklin Lawn Leveling Rake?

It is easy.  Just apply the soil to uneven or dead grass areas directly from the bag or wheelbarrow.  You can dump it or use a shovel. Add seed if needed and mix it into soil with a hand spade or shovel before emptying on to the ground. After you have dumped your soil onto the ground, take your Rocklin Lawn Leveling Rake and begin to spread the soil. The Rocklin Lawn Levelling Rake will naturally level the uneven spots leaving you with an even top surface.  Use the Rocklin Lawn Leveling Rake in a back-and-forth motion to blend the mixture into the grass surface or to level out a surface. The weight of the tool will spread the material. It is important you do not apply a downward force and damage grass in the surrounding area. Simply push and pull.
